Sinusitis (Sinus Infection)

What is Sinusitis (Sinus Infection)?

Sinusitis is an inflammation of the sinuses and nasal passages. A sinus infection can cause headaches, or pressure in the eyes, cheeks, sides of the head, or around the eyes. Sinus infections often follow a cold, and are often caused by the same viruses, and bacteria as a cold.

Sinusitis can be either acute (sudden) or chronic (long-term). With chronic sinusitis, the infection or inflammation lasts for up to  6-8 weeks or more.

What Are Sinusitis Symptoms?

  • Runny or congestion/stuffy nose, with pressure in your head and face
  • A headache
  • Bad breath
  • A cough that produces mucus
  • A fever
  • Pain in your teeth
  • A reduced sense of taste or smell

Diagnosing Sinusitis

Distinguishing Sinusitis from a simple upper respiratory infection or a common cold is important because Sinusitis is many times bacterial and requires antibiotics for treatment.  If it is viral, antibiotics will have no effect though. So proper diagnosis prevents confusion over which medications should be prescribed to treat the infection. We generally diagnose a sinus infection by a thorough medical history, physical examination, and occasionally xrays.

Treating Sinusitis

The main goals in treatment of a sinus infection are to reduce the swelling and inflammation in the nasal passages, eliminate the infection, promote drainage from the sinuses, and maintain open sinuses. We include in our care things that you can do to stay healthy & prevent sinus infections from reoccurring, such as the use of sinus irrigations.

We know that the right care can make the difference between suffering with an allergic reaction and feeling better. We work closely with you to develop a strategy that works for you in treating and maintaining optimal personal health so you can feel better and therefore live better.
